Jazz Legends and Hot Drummer Chicks

This weekend is the Cork Jazz Festival weekend - always a great weekend of music and fun. Last night I went to see Chick Corea and John McLaughlin's Five Peace Band and the Cindy Blackman Quartet. Now I don't know much about jazz music but apparently Chick Corea and John McLaughlin are pretty much jazz legends - they would have played with Miles Davis back in the day. (When I told my Dad who I went to see he, his face lit up and he said "Chick Corea! I used have a record of his".) They were amazing! That's all I can say about them - if they come to a city near you - go see them!

Cindy Blackman was pretty amazing too - she used to be Lenny Kravitz's drummer - but now she has her own jazz quartet. And after seeing her play I wish I was a hot drummer chick - she is just so cool! If only my Mum had given into my demands for drum lessons when I was 14 instead of making me choose the much more sensible flute...who knows what could have been.... This is what Chick said about Cindy's performance last night on his blog Notes from the Road - "Cindy Blackman and her quartet opened for us tonight in Cork. What an amazing drummer - she breaks all the stereotypes about women playing the drums — she’s bad! She took a solo on the toms and snare with the snares off that was a bit reminiscent of Tony’s approach — really creative — definitely her own thing."

I figure a fuzzy YouTube video is never going to be as good as the real thing (and I'm not sure anyone ever watches them anyway!) so just go to their websites to hear more and have a great weekend!
